Facebook is going to launch it’s Facebook Reels feature globally to about 150 countries. The feature is going to be released along with some other new features. Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote a

Facebook post explaining the situation. He wrote “Reels is already our fastest-growing content format by far, and today we’re making it available to everyone on Facebook globally. We want Reels to be the best place for creators to connect with their community and make a living, so we’re launching new monetisation tools too.”

The Reels feature was Meta’s response to TikTok. Reels have been tremendously successful on the Instagram platform and has helped the company grow exponentially in countries like India where TikTok was banned in 2020. Last year, Facebook had launched the Reels feature to it’s app but the feature was only available to the US.

Creators will be able to monetize Reels

Facebook will also allow creator’s to monetize Reels and will expand tests to overlay ads like banner and sticker ads. Facebook gave an official newsroom post and stated that the Reels feature will be available to download on iOS and Android devices in more than 150 countries and users will be able to watch these Reels on the Watch tab in the app.

The app is going to have a Reels label on top of the feed and is going to show users ‘Suggested Reels in Feed’ in some countries. This feature was already implemented on Instagram. The suggested Reels will also contain Reels from accounts that users don’t follow.

The post adds that half of the time spent on Facebook and Instagram is spent watching videos and Reels dominates the watch time. Regarding monetization, Facebook will also build some direct monetization options for Facebook Reels through ad revenue share and fan support.

Facebook says that these ads will be non-interruptive and creators will get a portion of the ad revenue.

Any creators in the US, Canada or Mexico who are a part of the company’s in-stream ads program will be eligible to monetise their Reels with ads. By mid-March the tests will expand to include creators in almost all countries where in-stream ads are available.

Facebook is testing fan support on Reels

Facebook is also going to test Stars on Reels in these next few weeks. With this feature users can buy and send Stars to a creator while watching these Reels. These Stars are to show support to the creator and it is also a revenue stream from them.

Facebook has also been testing out “full-screen and immersive ads” playing in between Reels since October 2021. This feature will be launched in more places around the globe over the next months.

Facebook Reels will have the same format as Instagram Reels

Reels on Facebook will continue to have the same format as Instagram Reels. This includes the ability to ‘Remix’ a reel with another public reel on Facebook. Further, Reels can be as long as 60 seconds on Facebook, and users have the option of saving a Reel as a draft before publishing it.
