Reliance Vs Amazon: Rs 50,000 Crore Battle For IPL Broadcasting Right Starts!

India’s biggest business conglomerate: Reliance and world’s biggest online commerce company Amazon will fight it out for IPL broadcasting rights.

And they both are ready to spend upto Rs 50,000 crore!

Stakes are high. This can be India’s biggest corporate battle for owning the rights to India’s biggest sporting event.

How will it pan out?

Battle For IPL Broadcasting Rights

As per reports coming in, both Amazon and Reliance are keen to grab IPL broadcasting rights, and Rs 50,000 crore can be the amount that they are willing to shell out.

At the same time, Sony and Walt Disney are also in the battle for IPL broadcasting, but it’s not yet clear how much budget they have right now.

BCCI will sell the IPL broadcasting rights for next 5 years, with 2 months of IPL matches per year, and whichever company does get the broadcasting rights, will literally own the space.

Disney, which owns Star India, had paid Rs 16,348 crore for bagging IPL broadcasting rights till 2022. And in 2021 alone, Star reached 350 million audience via IPL matches.

Why Reliance And Amazon Are Fighting?

Both Reliance and Amazon are keen to acquire the exclusive rights of IPL matches, and there are strong reasons for the same.

Reliance, which owns Viacom 18 have already acquired the rights to Spanish La Liga, and have set up a new sports channel to get more eyeballs, and dominate the niche.

Whereas Amazon wants to expand their user base in India, and get more Prime subscribers and IPL can be the best bet for the same. However, since BCCI wants to sell the rights of TV and digital broadcast together, Amazon may need to partner with a TV broadcaster for IPL, in case they win the bid.

On the other hand, Reliance already has a huge user base across both TV and digital streaming, and all they need is a big-ticket event like IPL to further leverage their positioning and expanding userbase.
