According to information provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India’s leading telecom service provider Reliance Jio lost almost 13 million subscribers in December, last year.

Furthermore, Reliance Jio’s close rival Bharti Airtel has now climbed neck-to-neck with the telco in adding new subscribers to its home broadband segment.

Reliance Jio Loses Subscribers in Dec 2021

The last month of 2021 witnessed about 12.9 millions subscribers of Reliance Jio leaving the network provider, possibly due to the prepaid tariff hike undertaken by the telecom major in the month.

In the same month, the country’s second largest telecom company Bharti Airtel and state-owned network provider BSNL added 0.47 million and 1.1 million network providers, while the cash-strapped telco Vodafone Idea continued its losing streak, losing another 1.6 million subscribers in the month.

Experts believe that the govt-owned BSNL is gaining new customers because of the price hike implemented by Jio, Airtel and Vi in late-Nov 2021 to Dec.

However, Reliance Jio continues to lead the telecom market, with a market share of 36%, compared to other telecom providers, both state-owned and private, as Bharti Airtel leads 30.81% market share, Vodafone Idea 23%, BSNL 9.9% and MTNL 0.28% market share.

Reliance Jio Added 0.18 Mill New Home Broadband Customers

As per the telecom regulator TRAI’s most recent data, Jio added 0.18 million new JioFibre customers in December 2021, followed by Bharti Airtel, which added 0.12 million users to its home broadband network in the month.

At the end of Dec 2021, Jio’s fixed broadband user base climbed to 4.6 million, while Bharti Airtel’s counterpart crept in close to stand at 4.2 million.

In the same month, BSNL lost 0.13 million users from its segment, falling third in the list.
