Flipkart Will Buy Your Old Smartphone Across 1700 Indian Cities: How Will Sell Back Program Work?

Flipkart has launched its Sell Back programme in which customers can sell their used smartphones on the platform.

The programme will initially cover smartphones and later branch into other categories of products offered on the site.

Strategic Acquisition

The announcement follows Flipkart’s acquisition of electronics re-commerce firm Yaantra.

This is an effort to strengthen its re-commerce business and enhance after-sale offerings in the smartphones segment.

Yaantra was incorporated in 2013 and it repairs and sells refurbished consumer tech products such as smartphones and laptops.

The new buyback programme is live in major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Patna, and more, across more than 1,500 pin codes.

The new programme can be accessed via the Flipkart app, marked by a new option on the app’s bottom bar.

The programme is applicable for all smartphones — whether purchased from Flipkart or elsewhere.

When customers sell their used smartphones on Flipkart, they will get an e-voucher of the “right buy-back value.”

Customers will be shown a value for their smartphone, based on the answers for three simple questions.

Once the customer confirms, Flipkart executives will pick up the smartphone within 48 hours.

After the platform has verified the product, it will send an e-voucher to the customer in return for the smartphone.

The scheme is a good initiative to tackle the problem of extensive e-waste in the country.

Out of 125 million used smartphones in circulation in India each year, only 20 million reach the second-hand market with the rest becoming e-waste.

Step 1: Open the Flipkart app and go to the menu bar where you’ll see a “Sell Back” option
Step 2: Tap on that and you’ll be directed to the “Sell Back Program” page of Flipkart.
Step 3: Tap the “Sell Now” tab (any one of them) to begin the process and answer the questions like name of phone’s brand, IMEI number, and others.
Step 4: Select your location and agree to the terms and conditions. The value of your used smartphone will be displayed.
Step 5: Confirm the same and the Flipkart will send an executive to collect your device within a day or two.
