All Mumbai Local Passengers Can Now Watch Movies, News, Shows For Free Inside Local Trains!

In partnership with Sugarbox Networks the Indian Railways is launching content on demand services in Mumbai local trains.

Improved Commute Experience

In order to enhance this experience the Central Railways has started content on demand service on the local trains from Friday.

Passengers will now be able to watch movies, TV shows and news for free while traveling.

The service provider has installed a device in each coach and the work for installing it on other suburban locals was underway.

Various preloaded multilingual content including movies, music videos will be provided to commuters through media servers installed in trains.

Central Railways general manager Anil Kumar Lahoti said that commute time is when people can freely spend time on their devices.

So it thought that by integrating technology into its services it could strengthen its goal to “stay future forward and customer centric”.

With its partnership it aims to make Mumbai an example of in-transit connectivity and make it a digitally equipped travel line.

The service is free and passengers can watch entertainment shows and shop without spending internet data.

The Railways will recover its revenue through advertising or from the services provider while remaining free for the public.

This is one such attempt from the Railways to earn more revenue from services outside of train fare.

This service for 165 suburban trains will fetch the CR Rs 8.17 crore in five years.

It had earned Rs 22.57 crore by way of non-fare revenue from April to January 2021-22.

This is a whopping 295% more than the same period last year.

It has entrusted RailTel, a mini-ratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, with providing the content on demand service to passengers in trains.

The service is live on 10 local trains and will extend to all trains in the coming months.

Commuters will have to download the Sugar Box application on their devices, following which they will receive an OTP on entering their mobile number.

No internet connection will be required and people don’t have to pay any charge for data consumption.
