Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has declared on Tuesday that the city will be unlocked by the end of February, as reported by news agency ANI.

On Monday, Feb 7, Mumbai observed its lowest single day new Covid cases addition of 356, since December 21, 2021, when as per the city’s municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, the third wave of the pandemic began.

Mumbai to Unlock By February End

Maharashtra’s capital city will be unlocked by the end of the ongoing month, stated the Mayor Kishori Pednekar.

She tweeted on Tuesday, “There is good news for Mumbaikars. Mumbai will be unlocked by the end of this month. We have made up our minds, but it is essential for the people to wear masks and observe social distancing”.

As mentioned, while the city will observe ease in restrictions and no Covid curfews, it will still be compulsory for people to follow social distancing norms and wear masks at all times.

The announcement comes after the city has been witnessing reduced cases of Covid-19 since the past several days. 

On Monday, there were 356 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest since Dec 21, 2021, along with five Covid-19 fatalities, stated the city civic body.

Of the 356 new cases, 88% of them or 313 cases are asymptomatic in nature and the case positivity rate in the city has come down to 1.19%.

Besides, all the containment zones in slums and chawls in the city have now been dissolved, and only one building remains sealed to check the spread of infection, adds a news report.

On Jan 7, 2022, the city witnessed the highest single-day case jump, of 20,971 new cases reported. 

As of Monday, 5,139 active cases remained in the city and the recovery count rose to 1,027,093, while the recovery rate stood at 98%. As of Tuesday, the total number of samples tested in Mumbai went up to 1,55,79,281.
