Since over a few years, European countries like Germany have been quite a preferred destination for students, especially the technology sector students to aim for their master’s course.
With the rules around entering the US for PG courses getting more difficult and expensive, Germany has been more liberal with its invitation for accommodating students from other countries as well as foreign job candidates.
If things couldn’t appear more convincing earlier, it sure does now, as the German government is readily looking forward to welcoming about 4 lakh skilled workers form foreign countries each year, to tackle the issue of uneven demographic distribution in the country as well as shortage of labor forces in different sectors, to the degree that it is now starting to affect the country’s economic recovery during the pandemic.
German Govt to Attract 4 Lakh Foreign Workers Each Year
Germany has been ailing with the issue of low birth rates since decades, along with uneven migration, leading to imbalance in the country’s demography, as a result of which the country’s working sectors have a shortage of skilled workers.
In order to fill in this void, the country’s new coalition Government is looking to attract about 4 lakh skilled workers from other countries every year, to:
- Tackle the issue of rising demographic imbalance, and
- Shortage of labour forces in key sectors, for the recovery of the economy post the Covid-19 pandemic.
In an interview with the WirtschaftsWoche business magazine, parliamentary leader of the co-governing Free Democrats, Christian Duerr stated, “The shortage of skilled workers has become so serious by now that it is dramatically slowing down our economy.”
He added that they could only get the problem of an ageing workforce under control with a modern immigration policy.
They aim to reach the milestone of adding 4 lakh skilled workers from abroad as soon as possible.
As per the German Economic Institute, the existing labor force in the country is slated to reduce by over 3 lakh skilled workers in 2022, as the proportion of workers retiring this year will exceed those added in the labor market.
