For the fifth month in a row, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. remained India’s largest telecom operator by active subscribers.

Reliance Jio Added More Subscribers

Interestingly, Jio Infocomm could achieve this even as peer Bharti Airtel Ltd. added more regularly paying users than it for the first time in five months. 

With this achievement, the Airtel added as many as 17.9 lakh active subscribers in November as compared to its one-year average of 22.2 lakh, as  per the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio gained 11.4 lakh such users, which is a somewhat less, compared with its one-year average of 32.6 lakh.

On the other hand, Vodafone Idea Ltd. continued to lose active subscribers. 

In terms of numbers, almost 27.5 lakh users migrated out of its network in November compared with 7.5 lakh in September and 14.1 lakh in October. 

This way, its one-year average of subscriber loss stood at 21.4 lakh.

Changing Paradigm Of Active Subscriber Base

At one side, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio’s active subscriber base grew 0.52% and 0.32% respectively over the preceding month while Vodafone Idea’s active subscriber share fell 1.17%. 

With this, the active subscriber stood at 34.79 crore for Bharti Airtel, for Vodafone Idea: 23.16 crore while for Reliance Jio, it stood at 35.96 crore.

Improving Active Subscriber Market Share 

During November, Bharti Airtel’s active subscriber market share improved by 18 basis points. 

In the case of Reliance Jio, the telecom has managed to improve on this count since March 2021. 

On the contrary, Vodafone Idea continues to lose its active market share.

Gain In Gross Subscriber 

In the month of November 2021, the telecom industry gained 12 lakh gross subscribers. 

For the second straight month, the industry gained subscribers after losing subscribers in the months of August and September.

Further, Reliance Jio has gained 20.19 lakh users followed by Bharti Airtel’s 13.18 lakh subscribers. 

Again, Vodafone Idea lost 18.97 lakh subscribers as compared to its annual average monthly subscriber outgo of 19.8 lakh.

Gross Subscriber Base For Telecoms 

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel’s gross subscriber base rose 0.47% and 0.37% over the preceding month, respectively. 

Month-on-month, Vodafone Idea’s gross subscriber base fell 0.71%. 

In numbers, Reliance Jio: 42.86 crore, followed by Bharti Airtel at 35.53 crore and Vodafone Idea at 26.71 crore. 

During July-October 2021, the industry witnessed a continuous growth in active subscribers although it fell in November. 

Moreover, the metric decreased by 90,000 compared with its annual average of 29.6 lakh.
