Every Train Guard Will Become ‘Train Manager’ With Immediate Effect: But No Salary Hike!

The Railways has changed the names of other roles as well.

The Indian Railways is renaming the post of Train Guard to Train Manager with immediate effect.

A Train Guard is virtually in-charge of the respective train.

Changing Public Perception

It issued a circular to the general managers (GMs) of all zones on January 13, informing them about the change.

It said that the decision was made after a long-pending demand, saying that the existing designation had become outdated.

Concerns were also raised that the term “guard” was misconstrued by the public which assumed they were a guard in a private firm.

Improving Morale

The Ministry of Railways added that the new designation is more in tune with their existing duties and responsibilities and will help improve “the motivation level” of the employees.

A senior railway official said that ‘Train Manager’ is also more “dignified” which would help them “lead a respectful life in society.”

The Railways has changed the names of other roles as well.

Guard Roles Renamed To Manager

The Assistant Guard will now be called Assistant Passenger Train Manager.

The Goods Train Guard is redesignated to the Goods Train Manager.

The Senior Passenger Guard will now be known as Senior Passenger Train Manager and Senior Goods Guard is now Senior Goods Train Manager.

The posts of Mail or Express Train Guard have been renamed to Mail/Express Train Manager.

No Financial Implications

Despite the changes in name, there will be no change or hike in salary, methods of recruitment, existing duties and responsibilities, seniority and avenues of promotion.
