Starting January 2022, traffic police in the Northeastern city Shillong will take action against motor riders who do not use hazard lamps as per indication. Such people will be fined and the city’s traffic police will issue challan against them.
As per Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, using hazard lamps of a vehicle improperly is punishable and could attract a fine of up to Rs 300.
While traffic police do not enforce traffic laws on anyone misusing hazard lamps, doing so now would attract a fine, states a report.
According to a Cartoq report, anyone misusing their hazard lamps while driving would be charged with a fine in Shillong, Meghalaya.
Hazard warning lights are required to be used if a vehicle is not in motion, to warn other road users of its presence. It should not be used while in motion. These hazard lamps are used as indicators, except they flash all at once with 1 such light on each corner of a vehicle, and at times additional ones on the door mirrors or front wings.
However, a lot of times people carelessly use these lights while driving, for instance while driving through a fog or when there’s poor visibility, leading to an added confusion on roads, causing accidents.
Most people see hazard lamps as a way of attracting attention to their vehicle. People use hazard lamps during rain, fog, and even when they are driving too slow or too fast on the highways.
Many people even use hazard lamps while driving at night or entering a tunnel and many others use the feature while driving on the wrong side of the road, added the report.
Turning on the hazard lamps all of a sudden while driving, may indicate that the vehicle is suddenly stopping, causing unwanted confusion and the car stops on the road.
