Now, children aged between 15 and 18 can register for COVID-19 vaccines on the CoWIN app from January 1.

How To Register?

They can use their school ID cards for registering as mentioned by the government on Monday morning.

An additional slot had been created on the online platform so that students could use their ID cards to register for the shots, according to Dr RS Sharma, CoWIN chief.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that children in the 15-18 age group could get their first round of Covid vaccines from January 3.

Booster Dose For Frontline Healthcare Workers

Besides this, PM Modi also announced the booster shots for frontline and healthcare workers and those over 60 age group .

Further adding that vaccinating kids – something other countries have already done – will help schools and students return to normal.

Vaccine For Children

After registering these children will be vaccinated with one of two shots – either Bharat Biotech’s double-dose Covaxin or Zydus Cadila’s three-dose ZyCoV-D.

Both of them have been cleared for kids over 12.

Apart from this, Serum Institute’s Novavax is also cleared by the drug controller for trials on kids between seven and 11 years of age.

Similarly, the Biological E’s Corbevax has been cleared for trials on children above five years.

So far, Novavax and Corbevax have not been cleared for use yet.

Coming to India, the country is trailing several other countries in offering Covid vaccines for kids including as many in Europe, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and New Zealand.

The arming increase in Covid cases in schools has affected the decision to start vaccinating children.

More than 17 girls from a school in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district tested positive on Saturday.

At the start of this week, 51 children at a school in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar returned positive tests.

Followed by 450 others who are tested and their results are awaited.

So far, India has administered 141.7 crore vaccine doses.

Although, only 58.1 crores are the second dose.

Over 6,500 new COVID-19 cases were reported this morning which is a 6.5 percent drop from yesterday.

It is noteworthy here that there was a massive 37 percent increase in Omicron Covid cases, which was 422 on Sunday and reached 578 this morning.
