Indians Ordered 115 Chicken Biryanis Every 60 Second: #1 Dish In India For 6 Years!

The Report

Swiggy has released its sixth StatEATstics report which reveals food habits of its users throughout the country. 

The report analyzes orders received by Swiggy for all its services including food delivery, grocery on Instamart, pick up and drop service by Swiggy Genie and HealthHub between January and December 2021.

Favorite Cuisines

While Indians have remained conservative with regards to their culinary trastes, other global cuisines have started appearing on plates.

Pan Asian, Indian and Chinese food were ordered the most this year. 

They are followed by Mexican and Korean.

Chicken Biryani Reigns Supreme

Chicken biryani has emerged as the most favored dish in India, with 115 biryanis ordered per minute or “2 (1.91) biryanis per second” in 2021 as compared to 90 biryanis per minute in 2020.

It has topped the charts for the sixth time in a row. 

Cities with this dish as the top preference are Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Lucknow.

Mumbai

In Mumbai, Dal Khichdi was the most liked, having sold twice as much as Chicken Biryani.

This might be reflective of a longing for home cooked food especially in the pandemic era.

In second place is chicken fried rice, followed by Pav Bhaji, Masala Dosa and garlic breadsticks.

Bengaluru 

Bengaluru people ordered the most dosas this year.

The second dish they liked the most was Chicken Biryani, followed by Paneer Butter Masala, Ghee Rice and Gobi Manchurian.

Delhi 

Dal Makhani topped the list in the city this year.

It is followed by some Indo-American favorites such as Pizza McPuff, McAloo tikki, Crispy veg burger and Masala Dosa.

Kolkata

Chicken Biryani was the most liked in this city as well, followed by Mutton Biryani. 

Chicken Darjeeling steam momos is at number 3, followed by Masala Dosa and chicken fried rice.

Health Trends

The country leaned towards healthy food this year, no surprise considering the times we are now living in. 

The search for healthy food doubled, along with a 200% increase in orders from health-focused restaurants.

The popular keto diet saw a growth in orders of 23%.

Vegan and plant-based food orders soared by 83%.

Bangalore topped the charts as the most health-conscious city followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Binging Snacks

The Indian appetite will always have room for guilty pleasures. 

The iconic samosa was the most binged snack of the year, with 5 million orders this year.

It was followed by Pav Bhaji as the second most-liked snack.

It beat out perennial favorite chicken wings, which were ordered 6 times less.

Sweet Tooth

There’s always room for dessert- in particular Gulab Jamun which stood at the top with 2.1 million orders.

It was followed by Rasmalai at second, with 1.27 million orders.
