Less Salary For WFH Employees Is Not Fair: IT Employee Union Petitions Maharashtra CM To Stop This

Recently, we reported that work from home employees can get less salary now, compared to those who are working from the office.

The Labor Ministry has allowed companies to tweak and edit their salary structures for working from home employees, and this means that soon, massive salary cuts can be announced.

The 11,000 member strong NITES, or Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate wants to stop this practice, and stop IT companies from deducting salaries.

A petition has already been sent to Maharashtra CM, Shri Uddhav Thackeray.

Here is the complete story..

NITES: Deducting Salaries For WFH Employees Is Not Fair

In their petition to the CM, NITES has said that it would be grossly unfair for the employee to get less salary, due to working from home.

Salary should be equal, and in some cases, extra allowance should be given for handling expenses like electricity and internet.

In the petition, Harpreet Saluja, President, Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate NITES said,  “Also when employees are working from home they are bearing the additional expenses of internet & electricity bills. Employees working from home are bearing certain infrastructure costs as well and these need to be added to the compensation of employees. In such testing times, the rights of the employees ought to be protected by necessary orders and directions to the IT/ITeS/BPO/KPO companies by the Hon’ble Maharashtra Government.”

This petition was sent to the CM after several employees complained to NITES about this unethical practice of deducting salaries for working from home.

How Salary Will Be Reduced For WFH Employees?

As per the reports, IT Companies can now deduct HRA or House Rent Allowance for the employees who are working from home. Since HRA is a major constituent of the overall salary, this deduction in HRA will have a greater impact on the gross salary.

Although the Labor Ministry also suggested an allowance for working from home, IT companies have not confirmed any such development.

Official notification from the Labor Ministry is expected next week on the issue of salary structure for work from home employees.

We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
