Still, wondering what that revolution is? That is of Electric Vehicles. The speed at which the Indian EV Ecosystem is evolving. And soon, fossil fuel-based IC Engine-powered vehicles will become thing of the past.
But still, there are many bottlenecks that we need to address at first. One of which is the high import duties faced by EV players around the globe. Even though the government is in no mood to lower the taxes, EV players are keeping their engines heated. One such company is Tesla.
Tesla receives Green Signal for three new models
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways website Vahan, Tesla’s India outfit, Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited (TIME), has recently received the green signal for three new models. With this, the total number of models for which Tesla has received approval has increased to seven.
As of now, the US-based EV-maker is in talks with the Centre to reduce import duties on electric vehicles. And hence they have not yet launched any vehicle in India.
Tesla has four key models on offer. Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model Y, and Tesla Model X. Recently, Tesla launched the Model S Plaid and is waiting for the formal launch of the Roadster and its much-awaited Cybertruck next year.
Tesla Model 3 will be the first one to hit Indian Markets
According to sources, the Model 3 SUV, is the most likely model to come to India first. It is the entry-level EV in the Tesla lineup. Tesla has not yet declared its manufacturing plans in India. Hence, after officially launching, the initial Tesla electric cars are going to be sold through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route only.
It should be noted that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had raised his reservations about launching EVs in India due to the high import duties. The tech company leader hopes for a ‘temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles’ as Tesla continues to lobby hard to reduce the taxes before it officially launches any cars in India. He had also asserted that a Tesla ‘factory in India is quite likely’ but at the condition that its imported cars first succeed in the country.
