According to the government, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Karnataka have emerged as India’s top three states for electric vehicle registration.

India’s electric vehicle sales are on the mend, as the country tries to meet the FAME II deadline of adding 10 lakh electric two-wheelers to the roads by March 2022.

Consumers are still unaware of the benefits available, such as user discounts and substantial exemptions from road tax and registration fees.

The step is towards the goal of turning 30% of all road wheels to electric by 2030.

Leading States In EV Sales

According to the government, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Karnataka have emerged as India’s top three states for electric vehicle registration.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that India has registered 870,141 electric vehicles.

The state with the most registered electric vehicles in Uttar Pradesh (255,700), followed by Delhi (125,347) and Karnataka (72,544) in that order.

Bihar (58,014) and Maharashtra (58,014) are in fourth and fifth place, respectively ( 52,506).

Gadkari stated that in 2015, the Ministry of Heavy Industries formulated the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme to promote the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles in India to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

GST On Electric Vehicles 

Electric vehicles are subject to a 5% tax while electric vehicle chargers and charging stations have been reduced from 18% to 5%.

“Apart from this, the ministry also allocates funds for state governments / Union Territories (UTs) for development and maintenance of state roads under the Central Road & Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and Economic Importance & Interstate Connectivity (EI&ISC) schemes,” Gadkari said.
