Suzuki has unveiled the new Alto 2022 in Japan.
The Alto hatchback, which is one of India’s best-selling cars ever, is entering its ninth generation since its debut in 1979.
Suzuki’s partner in India Maruti will bring the new gen Alto to India in the near future.
It should be noted that although the two share a name, the Indian Alto and the Japanese Alto have little in common.

Overall look, Dimensions
The official images reveal a boxy exterior reminiscent of the S-Presso with more rounded edges than the predecessor.
It is also taller by 50 mm, reaching a height of 1525 mm.
The length and width remain relatively unchanged at 3395 mm and 1475 mm respectively.
Platform
It will be designed and developed on Suzuki’s new lightweight HEARTECT platform that also underpins the new WagonR, S-Presso and the upcoming Celerio.
Its lightweight nature should improve its efficiency.
It is more suited to the urban environment than rough terrain with its small ground clearance.
Exterior
The front fascia comes with large trapezoidal headlamps, and a smaller front grille with a chrome bar placed between the headlamps.
It gets big window glasses and a more upright A-pillar.
The rear features an all-new tailgate, bumper and new upright tail-lights.
The vehicle gets 7-spoke wheels and is wrapped in dual-tone colour options.
Interior
The cabin has received some big updates such as a new front panel and is just better equipped than the previous model.
The interior height has increased by 45 mm and its length has decreased by 25 mm.
Typical dashboard features include a touchscreen infotainment system with a climate control unit under it, vertically-stacked air con vents, and new AC buttons.
The instrument panel comes with a large analogue speedometer.
The multi-functional steering wheel is fitted with controls for audio and Bluetooth telephony.
Safety
Driver assistance features under Suzuki Safety Support includes features like:
- Lane departure warning
- High beam assist
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Pedestrian detection
- Forward collision avoidance
Powertrain, Fuel Efficiency
It runs on a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine with a mild hybrid technology, featuring an integrated starter generator (ISG) and a small lithium-ion battery pack.
The mild hybrid system will further improve the overall fuel efficiency, potentially making it one of the most fuel efficient cars in its category.
Suzuki has not revealed the power figures or gearbox options.
Testing has begun in India and official launch will likely take place towards the latter-half of next year.
