Electric vehicles are being pushed by the government of India, and leading car manufacturers are also coming up with new electric vehicles.

Let’s look at some of the upcoming electric cars that leading car manufacturers, Tata, Hyundai, and Kia that will be unleashed in the market soon!

Tata Punch Based EV

Tata Motors will be introducing the electric version of the Punch micro SUV in the next couple of weeks. This new model will be launched in a single 1.2L NA petrol version, whereas the Punch will also come with a turbo petrol engine, a diesel engine and an electric powertrain.

The Punch will be based on Tata’s ALFA platform, and will be compatible with multiple engine options including CNG. The Punch EV will also come with Tata’s Ziptron high-voltage architecture, which is also noticed on the Nexon and Tigor EVs. As per reports, the new Punch based electric micro SUV will return over 300 km range.

Hyundai-Kia Mass Market EVs

The South Korean automobile manufacturers are planning to launch as much as 6 electric cars, 3 from each brand in the Indian market. These cars are expected to be here by 2024.

We already reported about the Kia EV6, which is Kia’s first electric vehicle on dedicated EV architecture. The car is built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is also offered on the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is also set to be launched soon. The EV6 will come with  two battery pack options, 58 kWh and 77.4 kWh, and these both will be available in RWD and AWD formats. The car is expected to be launched in 2022 via the CBU (Completely Built-Up) import route.

The central government wants to convert 60 lakh three-wheelers to electric cars (EVs).

Also India’s electric vehicle sales are on the mend, as the country tries to meet the FAME II deadline of adding 10 lakh electric two-wheelers to the roads by March 2022. Consumers are still unaware of the benefits available, such as user discounts and substantial exemptions from road tax and registration fees.

The step is towards the goal of turning 30% of all road wheels to electric by 2030. The electric vehicle market saw 1.35 lakh units sold in the previous fiscal year (2020-21). Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Karnataka were the top three states in terms of EV sales in FY21, said Meghna Nair, analyst, CEEW-CEF. 

The new models will reportedly be based on a low-cost skateboard platform, are expected to deliver more than 200 kms. The price of these cars is expected to be under Rs. 15 lakh. 

Hyundai is also planning to launch new EVs on an all new platform under its “Smart EV” project, under which there will be 3 new budget electric vehicles. As per reports, the same platform will be shared with Kia for its upcoming EV models.
