NitroPhone1

The company is most known for providing encrypted USB sticks and other similar products, but it has recently expanded into the smartphone market.

According to the company’s advertising material, microphone 1 combines current hardware with security, privacy, and a simple user experience. The phone costs 630 €, or a little under $750 US.

The company’s website also quotes former CIA executive Edward Snowden to favourably introduce the device. “When setting up a smartphone today, we use Daniel Micay’s Graphene OS as the base operating system.”

All the specification of the phone is similar to those offered by the Google Pixel 4a.

NitroPhone will have a 5.81-inch FullHD+ screen with Snapdragon 730G processor. The phone will also have 6GB of RAM and a 128GB flash drive. If we talk about the camera it will have a 12.2MP main camera.

5 Facts You Should Know About NitroPhone 1

  • The NitroPhone 1 is simply a Google Pixel 4a with GrapheneOS installed, which is a security-hardened version of Android that removes Google services and adds security measures.
  • Interestingly you can ask for the microphone to be physically removed from the phone before it is sent to you, ensuring that no one will ever listen to you without your permission. However, you can still use a wired or wireless headset to make calls.
  • By default, there is no cloud or Google Play Services integration. Users can install original Google Play Services in sandbox apps without specific permissions if necessary.
  • Also if you are too concerned about your securities, you will be happy to know that the phone has a Minimal secure system with few apps by default. Also, the Apps can’t access device IMEI and serial numbers, SIM card serial numbers, subscriber ID, MAC address etc.
  • End-to-end encrypted automatic backups to a USB drive or any cloud storage (e.g. Nextcloud).
