Over the years, Maruti Suzuki was not known for Sports Utility Vehicles. But S-Cross and compact SUV Vitara Brezza changed that. Vitara Brezza has been topping the sales charts month after month and S-Cross is also making considerable sales. Being at the higher side of the price bracket S-Cross also comes with its own perks. And to up the game, it looks like the company is giving a major facelift to the model.
The New Variant Will Offer Full Hybrid Powertrain
As the company is trying to up its game in the SUV segment, the new S-Cross is reported to feature a full hybrid powertrain on the MY-2022 model.
With a contract with Toyota, Suzuki has the advantage of using shared technologies. Taking inspiration from the Toyota Yaris hybrid, the hybrid setup will have a 1.5L NA petrol motor as the generator that will power a battery, which will further send current to an electric motor.
The petrol engine will deliver 91 PS of peak power and 120 Nm of max torque. The car will be graced with two motors – MG1 and MG2. The first one will be used to start the engine and charge a 0.76 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The second one is a permanent magnet synchronous type traction motor generating 80 PS and 141 Nm.
Suzuki has earlier used the Toyota Hybrid System full-hybrid setup on the A-cross. Thus, using the Yaris’ hybrid powertrain on the S-Cross makes complete sense.
Increase in Mileage
With the help of the 48V mild-hybrid setup, Maruti’s S-Cross boasts an ARAI-claimed mileage figure of 18.55 kmpl. The newer version of the car is available from RPMs as low as 2,000 revs. This will lead to an increased fuel efficiency of 21.3 kmpl.
Currently, the S-Cross is retailing with a 1.5L naturally-aspirated K15B motor. It powers 105 PS against 138 Nm. Also, to offer aid in the vehicle with improved low-end grunt and mileage a 48V mild-hybrid tech, dubbed SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) is also provided. The transmission will be offered in two variants– 5-speed MT and 4-speed AT.
The new variant of the car is expected to give tough competition to the likes of Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta, and Kia Seltos.
