The payments feature of the instant messaging platform, Whatsapp Payments has introduced a new feature in India, which lets users choose from a list of personalised background, while making transactions and sending payments to closed contacts on Whatsapp.

The feature, termed as ‘Payments Backgrounds’ has been introduced on the instant messaging platform in India on August 17 and aims to provide customers an ‘expressive’ payments experience.

New Whatsapp Payments Feature Added Today

Whatsapp introduced a new feature for its Payments platform on Tuesday, called the Payments Backgrounds, which aims at delivering a personalised payments experience for its users on the platform.

The feature has been added and is live for both Android and iOS users.

Initially, a list of seven backgrounds have been added by Whatsapp, which the users can choose from, for sending money to their friends and families.

Some of the backgrounds are even theme-based. For instance, there are personalised backgrounds for occasions like birthdays, holidays, and travel. Furthermore, Whatsapp will be launching a new themed background on Sunday, August 22, for Rakshabandhan.

Whatsapp states that the core idea for launching the Payments Background feature is to add a flavor of expression for users exchanging money with their loved ones on the platform.

How to Choose a Payments Background?

While making a new payment on Whatsapp, click on the ‘Backgrounds’ icon on the ‘Send Payment’ screen.

Doing that will pop down a list of all the available background options, you can choose from.

The platform all gives the users the ability to add a personalised note in the background, which will say more about the payments (like the reason for the payment).

Once done, the recipient will be able to see the background along with the amount of the payment you have made.

“With Payments Backgrounds, our effort is to bring excitement to everyday payments through WhatsApp and enable our users to express themselves if they wish, through a range of emotive themes denoting celebrations, affection, warmth or fun,” states Manesh Mahatme, Director of Whatsapp Payments.

“Sending and receiving money is so much more than just a transaction. Often it’s the stories behind the exchanges that are priceless,” he continues.

Whatsapp Aims to Increase Consumer Numbers

Whatsapp Payments, since its launch in November has not been able to garner as many users as expected. There has been no significant growth marked by the platform for its payments arm.

As per NPCI’s data, Whatsapp Payments’ market share compared to other UPI-based apps, tumbled from 0.16% to 0.014%. In July 2021, the platform served 4.7 lakh transactions, worth Rs 45.33 crores.
