Who knew coronavirus disease(Covid-19) an epidemic could become a global pandemic! When you talk about normal people, people hardly believed that they could be infected.

The government had to put up with lockdown and restrictions to tackle the spread of the virus. Almost everything was at a loss as the spread had left economies and businesses stranded.

TCS employs over 500,000 people worldwide and had never tried remote work before the outbreak. But within three weeks of India’s lockdown taking effect last year, 96% of TCS staff were working remotely.

The corporation claims that the concept has worked so successfully that it has no desire to change it.

TCS Employees Embracing Remote Working

N. Ganapathy Subramaniam, CEO of Tata Consultancy Services, said that in nearly 40 years, he and his staff had rarely worked remotely.

“Simply figuring out how to ship office equipment was a tough task. So the first and foremost thing was working with the government to say, ‘Allow us to run trucks by which we will be able to move things to our employees,'”

Subramaniam, the COO of TCS, told CNN Business.

TCS believes it can boost productivity by 25% by embracing more remote work, Subramaniam said.

For a global client list that includes Deutsche Bank, SAP, and Virgin Atlantic, the Indian IT giant needs to address any worries about data and privacy.

“We had to go and talk to our customers and get their nod as well because contractually, we are expected to perform the work only from an approved location,”

TCS Post Pandemic

Not just TCS, many companies suffered in 2020 because of the lockdown and thus are looking forward to switching to a hybrid model after the pandemic.

Profits, on the other hand, have begun to recover. TCS reported a 32% increase in net income in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period the previous year.

Subramaniam also said If executives can perform high-paying IT jobs from a wider variety of locations, that may “improve quality of life in smaller towns in India,”

“We’ve got to think through all of this,” said Subramaniam, when asked whether people would be paid the same if they worked in a smaller city, rather than in places like Mumbai or Bangalore.

He also believes that other IT rivals may suffer when it comes to “attracting good talent,” if they do not offer the kind of flexibility that TCS is planning.

How Remote Working Can Reduce Global Carbon Footprint?

TCS predicts that by having the majority of its employees work remotely by 2025, it will be able to lower its worldwide carbon footprint by 70% compared to a decade ago.

“The environment has become a lot cleaner” already over the last year, said Subramaniam.
