The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will begin the third stage of airport privatisation in October, according to Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) sources told Moneycontrol.

The AAI is considering a new approach in which a profitable and a non-profitable airport are combined before being sold.

Why Does The Government Plan To Bundle These Airports?

The Airport Authority of India has mainly selected six airports for privatisation. The airports are Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Amritsar, Raipur, Indore and Trichy . According to the official these airports are for the next round of privatisation.

Before any further plans the government decides to bundle these airports.
This is done before offering it to prospective bidders.

  • Kushinagar and Gaya airports with Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh
  • Kangra airport with Amritsar in Punjab
  • Jalgaon airport with Raipur in Chhattisgarh
  • Jabalpur airport with Indore in Madhya Pradesh
  • Salem airport with Trichy in Tamil Nadu.

Clubbing Of A Profitable Airport And A Non-Profitable Airport!

The AAI is considering a new approach in which a profitable and a non-profitable airport are combined before being sold.

“Air passenger traffic is likely to reach around 80 per cent of the pre-COVID levels by October, if there is no new wave of COVID-19 or if the third wave is milder. We are hoping to invite bids for the new airports by October,”


The official said

By October, the government hopes to hand over control of the airports in Ahmedabad, Mangalore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram to the Adani Group.

Government May Privatise More Airports

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech said that the government may privatise more airports.

“We have received interest for the privatisation of many more airports, including Darbhanga in Bihar, and Puducherry,” the official said.
