Work From Office Cancelled For 8 Lakh Employees Of This Tech Giant! WFH To Continue..
Amazon will allow employees to continue working from home (WFH) till next year.
WFH Period Extended
It is extending the WFH period to Jan. 3, 2022, an extension from the earlier set date of Sept. 7 of this year.
The decision is a shift from its earlier announcement where it said it planned an “office-centric culture.”
It then changed guidelines to having workers come into offices 3 days a week upon facing competition from startups and others which offered more flexibility in schedules.
The company said that it was prioritising the health of its employees and will keep following local government norms for a “safe office return.”
All staff except those proven to be fully vaccinated will have to wear masks inside offices.
The decision was prompted by a rise in cases of the Delta variant which has caused other companies to rethink their decisions as well.
How Other Tech Giants Are Reacting
Presently, the US daily average is 94,819 cases, the highest in the world.
Alphabet Inc’s Google also made a similar decision by extending its WFH policy through Oct. 18.
Facebook said that it will require its US staff to be vaccinated.
Twitter is closing the offices it had reopened.
No Relief For Warehouse And Delivery Staff
It should be noted that Amazon’s latest mandate applies only to corporate employees and not warehouse and delivery operations staff which comprise the majority of its workforce.
These workers, 1.2 million-person strong globally, carry out critical duties which keeps the e-commerce giant running, such as packing boxes, sorting merchandise and loading and unloading trucks at Amazon warehouses.
