The scheme seeks to modernise food processing infrastructure.
The government reported to the Lok Sabha that it created 6.6 lakh jobs through 22 operational mega food parks (MFP) put in place by the Mega Food Park scheme.
As per the scheme guidelines, each MFP upon becoming fully operational would create direct and indirect jobs for 5,000 people.
But the actual configuration of a project may vary depending upon the business plan.
38 MFPs have been accorded final approval and 3 have been given in-principle approval.

What Is The Mega Food Park Scheme?
The scheme seeks to modernise food processing infrastructure.
It seeks to provide a mechanism through which agricultural production can be linked with the market.
It does so by creating state-of-the-art support infrastructure in a well-defined agri / horticultural zone.
How It Creates Jobs
With this infrastructure, modern food processing units can be installed.
As the scheme gets implemented, employment opportunities are created particularly in the rural sector.
The scheme isn’t state or area specific and proposals are solicited through Expression of Interest.
Inviting Private Sector Investment: PLI
Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Prahlad Singh Patel also shared that the government is constantly encouraging and incentivizing increased private sector investment.
To that effect, it has introduced 3 major initiatives.
Firstly, the government has introduced a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the Food Processing Sector.
It has already been approved for various sectors including electronic or technology, pharmaceuticals, telecom & networking, and solar PV modules.
Inviting Private Sector Investment: Lending Support
Secondly, the ministry is implementing a centrally sponsored “PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme”.
This will provide financial, technical and business support for installment/upgradation of 2 lakh micro food processing units.
It plans to do this in a span of 5 years from 2020-21 to 2024-25 with an outlay of Rs 10,000 crores.
Inviting Private Sector Investment: Operation Greens Scheme Expansion
The third thing is expanding the scope of “Operation Greens scheme” from Tomato, Onion & Potato (TOP) to 22 perishable products.
This will improve value addition in agriculture and allied products and their exports.
Private investment would go to overall development of the Indian food processing sector which would promote value addition in the agricultural and allied sector, and reduce wastage.
