WhatsApp Puts New Privacy Policy On Hold; Confirms To Delhi Hight Court

In January this year, Whatsapp introduced an update to its privacy policy, according to which it could share users’ business conversations and data with Facebook, if given permission.

WhatsApp has taken a u-turn now and has announced to the Delhi High Court that it would not force users to accept its privacy policy or limit functionality for the users who have opted not to accept these terms. Apparently, this is until the government passes the Data Protection Bill, which will specify how such data can be processed.

As per a statement issued by the company, “We will not limit functionality of how WhatsApp works in the coming weeks. Instead, we will continue to remind users from time to time about the update… we will maintain this approach until at least the forthcoming PDP law comes into effect.”

Notices had been issued by the CCI, or Competition Commission of India, to ask for more information about the policy. In an earlier hearing the court had refused to stay the CCI notices

WhatsApp had rebutted that the notices “smacked of overreach” as the information it was seeking was already pending before a different bench of the same court.

WhatsApp’s New Privacy Policy

After receiving huge backlash and protests over their arm-twisting tactics to enforce the new privacy policy, Whatsapp postponed its initial deadline for implementing the new privacy policy, scheduled for February 8 to May 15.

On May 14, the messaging platform announced that users will not lose any functionalities May 15, if they do not agree to their privacy policy.

WhatsApp had previously stated that users who don’t accept the new policy of WhatsApp will not lose their accounts. However, they will lose their access to some important features if they don’t accept the new policy.

As per the FAQ page of WhatsApp users will not have full functionality until they accept the new privacy policy of WhatsApp.
