Employee Opinions

The Finnish firm surveyed its employees last year where a majority wanted to be allowed to work 2-3 days a week from home or a remote location.

90% had felt that their productivity actually increased when they were working from home.

81% were in favor of coming to office to reconnect with colleagues and collaboration, albeit for fewer days than before.

Will Cut Jobs

Chief Executive Pekka Lundmark commented that the pandemic forced organisations to change their ways.

Technology has played a major role in innovation and has produced results that are much better compared to what would have been had old norms been followed.

Back in March, the firm said that it plans on cutting 10,000 jobs over 2 years, shortening its 92,000 strong workforce.

By cutting the jobs, it will also cut costs which will allow it to increase investment in research capabilities.

New Office Design

Nokia will also redesign its offices where 70% of the space will be dedicated to teamwork and meetings.

Lesser amount of space will be allocated for workspaces.

The idea is to adapt to an increasing number of its workers going remote, thereby reducing the need for “concentrative workspaces”.

The changes have already come in place in its Dallas, Singapore and Budapest offices with further sites expected to catch up by the year end.

Future Plans

Nokia plans on introducing a “smart office solution” wherein employees can “book workspaces and office amenities, as well as toolkits and guides aimed at helping people managers and teams to establish better, more flexible and sustainable working models.”

The rollout of the plan will be on a country-by-country basis since they have to adhere to local customs, laws and their respective pandemic situation.
