Govt Blames Infosys For Issues With New Income Tax Portal; Asks Them To Answer Taxpayers

On Tuesday, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged Infosys Ltd. and its co-founder Nandan Nilekani to ensure the new income tax e-filing portal does not let down taxpayers in service quality since it is developed by them.

Glitches In New Tax Filing Portal

Earlier at the start of the week, a new e-filing website for Income Tax Returns (ITRs) has been launched by the Income Tax Department on Monday, June 7, 2021.

After its launch,  many people took to social media to complain about not being able to reach the site.

While considering their complaints, the finance minister said she has taken note of the grievances expressed in social media.

In response, a tweet from Sitharaman’s account, which was retweeted by the Income Tax Department said,  “The much-awaited e-filing portal 2.0 was launched last night 20:45hrs. I see in my TL (timeline) grievances and glitches. Hope @Infosys & @NandanNilekani will not let down our taxpayers in the quality of service being provided. Ease in compliance for the taxpayer should be our priority,”.

So far, Infosys has not released any comment on the subject.

Intervention At The Highest Level

Form this intervention at the highest level, in response to social media feedback, indicates the importance it attaches to taxpayer convenience.

In the case of Infosys, it manages the IT infrastructure of GSTN, the company that processes GST returns.

The IT firm had faced flak earlier for the technical glitches taxpayers faced.

Prior to this, last year, the government brought one issue to the notice of the IT major.

It was about the maximum concurrent sessions that are possible in the GSTN’s portal.

Launch Of New Portal

The Income Tax department is planning to offer an enhanced and intuitive user experience to taxpayers with this initiative.

Currently, it is in the process of launching a mobile application soon.

As part of the administration’s e-governance plan, the new e-filing portal was developed in mission mode.

The new portal is in the final stages, announced by the IT Department. They said in a tweet about how excited they are about the new portal.

The IT Department appreciated the patience as the team works to make it more operational.

This new portal promises several taxpayer-friendly features such as immediate processing of tax returns for the quick issue of refunds and interactive software for easier preparation of returns.
