Will Mumbai Locals resume Operations?

As per the state cabinet Minister Vijay Wadettiwar, the Mumbai Local Trains will not resume operation for general passengers any time soon. He has stated that that the Mumbai Local Trains will not be resuming their operations at least for the next 15 days. This will be a precautionary measure against COVID-19.

He also says that the passengers will not be maintaining social distancing and hence the trains will continue to operate only for people who are employed in essential services for the time being.

Wadettiwar also is the State Relief and Rehabilitation Minister and confirmed that the Uddhav Thackeray-led government is planning to relax the lockdown restrictions in a phased manner in the districts where the number of COVID-19 cases is declining rapidly.

He confirmed that the districts outside the red zone will be free of some restrictions after June 1. As per Wadettiwar, “Out of total 36 districts, 15 are in the red zone (high caseload) and the curbs there could be made stricter.”

Some of the districts where the number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise are Buldhana, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, Sangli, Yavatmal, Amravati, Sindhdurg, Solapur, Akola, Satara, Washim, Beed, Gadchiroli, Ahmednagar, and Osmanabad.

Restrictions And Lockdown In Maharashtra To Be Lifted In  A Phased Manner

The state has been under strict restrictions since April 21 in order to slow the transmission of COVID-19. Under this lockdown, private offices, non-essential stores, and restaurants were directed to remain fully closed under the new restrictions. Important shops and service providers, such as groceries, fish, poultry, vegetable, fruits, meat, and egg vendors, are permitted to operate between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., while government offices operate at 15% capacity only.

The demand for reducing the restrictions of the lockdown has been increasing and the government will be monitoring the entire situation for the next four or five days before announcing a decision. 

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra stands at 22,122, which has been the lowest single-day spike in 69 days; 17,864 infections were reported on March 16. The total of the state has now breached 5,602,019.

The number of deaths from the Chinese virus stands at 89,212.

However, there has been a distinctive decline in the cases in the past three weeks. This is evident from the reduction in the daily caseload, which is below 30,000, from around 55,000 three weeks ago.
