Ola Will Set Up Electric Charging Points Costing Rs 3500 Across Malls, Shops, Apartments, Homes

With the aim to bring down the cost of setting up EV charging infrastructure, India is planning to set up AC charging points for electric vehicles in the next two months.

The target price for these AC charging points, as per the statement issued by the government on Wednesday, shall start with something as low as ?3,500 per unit.

The main driving force is the aim of providing affordable EV charging infrastructure across the country in order to promote electric mobility.

In order to develop this low-cost EV charging infrastructure, a committee comprising of EV manufacturers and suppliers was set up.

In order to charge electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, a power of 3kW is allowed by the low-cost AC charge point. Currently, the charging units available for electric two and three wheelers cost almost twice as much as the target price decided, i.e. ?3,500.

The statement said that a target price of less than ?3,500 (USD 50) was set by the group for a smart AC charge point operated with a smartphone, in a feat to achieve the global breakthrough.

With a 220V 15A single phase line, this low-cost AC chargepoint can be set up anywhere.

 The charging as well as payment can be done with the help of a smartphone, reads the statement.

The Transformation Plan Of Govt

Added that one smartphone can be used for multiple accounts and payment options. The government intends to transform car parks into municipal and train stations, shopping malls, hospitals, office buildings, apartments and even small shops.

In the next two months, the government will complete the field testing and durability of these EV charging stations before officially releasing them. “These will be officially issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS),” the statement read. He added that the forthcoming infrastructure would help create a new industry sector that would cater for low-cost charging infrastructure for EVs. The government expects that the two- and three-wheeled electric component will propel India’s transformation into electricity. “By 2025, forecasts are expected to reach four million such vehicles (EV) that can be sold annually, to ten million by 2030. Any charging solution for the industry must be daunting, easily accessible to the public; we must support cooperation, and inexpensive, “the statement said.
