Pune Has India’s Best Health Infrastructure; Delhi Has Worst (Hospital Beds, Air Quality & More)

A proud moment for Punekars! Pune has been ranked the first when it comes to health infrastructure as per a report by Housing.com. 

The national capital, Delhi comes in last among eight urbanized cities of India.

Pune Ranks First In Health Infrastructure With 3.5 Hospital Beds Per 1,000 People

This report titled, “State of Healthcare in India” has been published by Housing.com, which is owned by US-based News Corp and its Australian group firm REA. Eight of India’s most urbanized cities have been ranked by the report, viz., Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai Metropolitan Region(MMR) and Pune on the basis of Housing.com’s City Health Card.

These rankings are benchmarked against the health infrastructure-related parameters, which includes number of hospital beds per 1,000 people, air quality, water quality, sanitation, liveability index. Additionally, 40 percent weightage has been given to the number of hospital beds.

As per Housing.com, “When it comes to health infrastructure, Pune is the most equipped city in India, offering 3.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people.”

Apparently this is way higher as compared to India’s national average.  In the public healthcare system, if we count public plus private hospital beds that are available per 1000 people in India, there are only half a bed and 1.4 beds are available. 

India Has Lowest Number Of Doctors; Delhi Ranks Last

As per the report, India also has the lowest number of doctors. There are about 0.86 per 1000 people whereas, other major economies have something between 2 to 4 doctors per 1,000 people.

Pune, which ranks first, has also ranked significantly higher on parameters such as ease of living, water quality, and performance and sustainable initiatives taken by the local government of the city.

Ahmedabad has been ranked second in the list with about 3.2 hospital beds per 1,000 people, followed by Bengaluru despite having a higher number of hospital beds. The city’s low score on air quality, water quality and availability, and municipal performance index caused Bengaluru to sink in its ratings.

Delhi has ranked the lowest in the list, because of its low scores on air and water quality, sanitation and performance of municipal bodies. 

Mumbai stands fourth in the report, followed by Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata which stand at the fifth, sixth and seventh positions, respectively.
