One of the worst-hit Covid-19 states in India, Maharashtra has now barred the entry of bank employees on local trains, metro trains and monorails, in its capital city Mumbai.

Until now, Mumbai locals extended their services to the staff of central and state governments, government PSUs, nationalised and private banks, dabbawalas, and frontline health workers.

However, on Tuesday, the MH government told the Bombay High Court that bank employees will no longer be allowed to use the Mumbai local train services, amid the increasing infection cases in the city.

Bank Employees Can No Longer Use Local Trains

The Maharashtra government informed the Bombay High Court yesterday that bank employees will no longer be allowed to travel in local trains, metro trains and monorails in Mumbai, in view of increasing Covid cases across the city.

Frontline health workers and state government officials will only be allowed to use these travel services.

Additionally, even the bank staff of nationalised banks will not be allowed to use local trains, until further order.

A division bench of Justice K K Tated and Justice Abhay Ahuja heard a plea filed by Cooperative Banks Employees Union (CBEU) seeking permission for cooperative bank employees to travel to work by public transport including local trains, metro and monorail, states Indian Express.

As the petitioner organization failed in producing substantial documentary evidence for claiming the permission granted to nationalised banks’ staff to board local trains, the CBEU lost the plea.

However, the High Court has assured CBEU that coming up with documentary evidence to establish the permission to the court, will grant the suitable request for nationalised bank staff to travel on trains.
