Apple To Introduce Blood Sugar Level Monitoring Feature On Its Next Smartwatch
In February, a patent was filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) titled “Terahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging In Dynamic Environments With Performance Enhancements using Ambient Sensors”.
This patent revealed to us that the Cupertino based tech giant was working on blood sugar level readings, which confirmed the possibility of Apple introducing glucose level monitors on Apple watches in the future. This feature will definitely be of great use for people with diabetes.
This patent is now on the verge of confirmation because the UK health tech firm Rockley Photonics has recently announced that Apple has been the company’s largest customer for the last two years and the main focus of the firm is tracking blood glucose levels.
Apple Watches already have an electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood oxygen level (SpO2) monitoring in its watches.
How Does Blood Sugar Monitoring Work In Smartwatches
When Apple rolls it out, the feature of measuring blood sugar levels will definitely be of great use for people with diabetes. Especially those who have to get their blood sugar level measured before every insulin injection as the blood sugar levels are important to decide the dosage of each shot.
As of now, everyone who wants to get their blood sugar levels checked has to get their blood drawn, which is then inserted into a glucometer and a reading is obtained.
Rockley Photonics has already developed next-generation sensors that will be fitted inside the Apple watches by next year. As per reports, the sensors will be able to read certain signals from a person’s blood by shining infrared light through the skin from the back of a smartwatch.
Apple will also include other sensors on the upcoming smartwatch which will measure the alcohol level and blood pressure of users. However, there is no confirmed news about it yet.
