1200 employees at the British call centers of HSBC Holdings Plc have been instructed to work from their homes now on a permanent basis. 

A majority of the big organizations and firms have resorted to allowing their employees to work from home in order to follow social distancing norms and limit the spreading of the COVID-19 disease any further.

HSBC’s 1200 Staff Members To Work From Home Permanently

HSBC is the biggest bank of Europe with total assets of US $ 2.715 trillion.

Recently, there was news about HSBC deciding to let go of 35000 people working with the bank. The bank had put this decision on hold after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic there will also be a freeze on almost all external hiring. 

A memo was also sent by Chief Executive Noel Quinn to 235000 employees of HSBC that reveals and confirms both news.

The company has issued a statement about announcing permanent work from home for its employees. It states, “We are in discussions with contact center colleagues who serve HSBC UK retail customers about ways that we can offer flexibility on work location while ensuring the way we work meets our customers’ needs.”

As revealed by Unite, one of Britain’s biggest employment unions, 70% of the 1800 total employees have volunteered to take the work from home facility. This makes up for about 1200 employees, who are all working in the call centers, based across England, Wales, and Scotland.

HSBC Offering 300 Pounds To Make Up For Additional Costs

This move of making employees working from home permanently will also help the bank in reducing its costs. 

As per reports, the expectations of employees who have been working from homes for the past year have now changed. 

As per Unite, HSBC has now offered a 300 pounds ($414.75) per year working from home top-up payment to the staff. This sum is given to cover any additional costs that the staff may incur, such as higher heating and electricity bills.

Also, a quarter of the staff of HSBC has declined the offer, stating that they wanted to work in the office for at least some of the time. Additionally, 5% of the staff decided to go back to the office permanently.
