The number of active Covid-19 cases are on a rapid surge around the country, with Maharashtra contributing to over 70% cases each day.
The Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan met with key officials from the worst Covid hit states on Saturday and discussed tightening the rigidity over Covid appropriate behaviour.
Data from some internal surveys were also spilled in this meet, which highlighted that while 90% people were aware of the importance of wearing masks, only 44% actually wore them.

90% Covid Deaths Seen Among Over 45
According to internal surveys presented by the Health ministry on Saturday, 90% of the deaths due to Covid-19 in India continue to come from the category of people over the 45-year age bracket.
The surveys also depict that despite the austerity of wearing at least a mask and maintaining social distancing, only 44% people actually wear masks.
This reflects total ‘laxity’ in the behaviour portrayed by the public in terms of adherence of regulations.
These were the major concerns and discussion points in the meeting headed by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan with key officials from 12 States and Municipal Commissioners and District Collectors of 46 districts that are the most affected by rising cases and mortality, informs the Hindu.
These 12 states are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab and Bihar.
62,258 New Cases Recorded on Saturday
The weekly count of Covid-19 cases and fatalities around the country has shot up meteorically, with 46 districts contributing to about 71% cases and 69% deaths.
On Saturday itself, the 24-hour count reached to 62,258 new positive cases, Maharashtra alone contributing to 36,902 cases.
Maharashtra is followed by Punjab and Chattisgarh, reporting 3,122 and 2,665 new cases, respectively.
The Health ministry stated that only one infected person can spread Covid-19 to no less than 406 other individuals in a period of 30 days, without any precautions/restrictions.
This number can be reduced to just 15, if the infected individual reduces his/her physical exposure by 50%.
If this infected individual further reduces physical exposure to 75%, the average number of infected individuals he/she can create goes down to only 2.5.
The statement also noted that the concept of ‘second wave’ reflected more the laxity among everyone regarding ‘COVID appropriate behaviour’ and COVID containment and management strategy at the ground level.
States are advised to increase testing in all districts and increase RT PCR tests, to more than 70% of total. Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) to be mostly deployed as a screening tool in flushing out cluster cases from densely populated areas.
