In the past few days, after a steep fall in the number of new Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, a spike has been observed.
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that the daily headcount in the state increased from about 2,000 cases per day in January to almost 7,000 cases/day now.
Citing these results, Maharashtra has announced to ban all forms of gatherings in the state, including religious, political and social gatherings. The state government has also put up a new lockdown in some areas of the state, starting from February 21, 2020.
New Covid-19 Cases in Maharashtra
The state reported an addition of 6,971 new COVID-19 confirmed cases on Sunday, with 2,417 people reportedly recovered in the past 24 hours.
According to a tweet by the state health minister Rajesh Tope, the state’s Covid-19 headcount now increased to 21,00,884, of which a total of 19,94,947 patients have recovered, while 51,788 have lost their lives to the virus.
Today, newly 6971 patients have been tested as positive in the state. Also newly 2417 patients have been cured today. Totally 1994947 patients are cured & discharged from the hospitals. Total Active patients are 52956.The patient recovery rate in the state is 94.96%.

Currently, the state goes ahead with a number of 52,956 active coronavirus cases.
MH CM’s Statement on Increasing Cases
Maharashtra has been the worst-hit Covid-19 state in the country, which adds to a sense of urgency when it comes to an increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases in the state.
In response to the increasing cases of Covid-19 in the state, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray addressed, “The second wave has been knocking on our door. Whether it has come or not will be confirmed in the next eight to fifteen days.”

He also demanded putting into place stricter measures to curtail the increasing cases, from Monday in 4 districts of the state, in addition to a warning of instilling new Covid restrictions to be imposed across the state, shall safety protocols not be followed.
Thackeray also announced that all political, religious and social gatherings will be prohibited across the state from Monday, as they attract crowds.
“The pandemic is raising its head in the state, but whether it is another wave or not, it will be known in eight to fifteen days”, stated the CM.
Will There be Lockdown Imposed in MH?
On Feb 21, CMO Maharashtra proposed a question to the citizens of the state, asking if they wanted the government to put up a lockdown, via a tweet.
Thackeray said that the state’s decision would follow depending upon the citizens’ answers in the upcoming 8 days.
He added, “Lockdown is not the way out, but stopping physical contact is the way to break the transmission chain. A century ago, there was the Spanish Flu. Then also masking up, washing hands, maintaining physical distancing was the strategy used.”
He also added that if one doesn’t want a lockdown imposed, then using masks, washing hands and maintaining physical distance will be mandatory.
