All You Need to Know About KFON

The Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the Kerala Fibre Optic Network in the state on Monday.

  • With KFON, free internet connectivity will be provided to 20 lakh BPL families, covering 14 districts.
  • Once the optical fibre is launched, about 30,000 government institutions in the state  will have high speed internet connectivity, as opposed to only 10% government offices receiving the same currently.
  • The internet speed available will be from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps
  • KFON is a joint venture of Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited and Kerala State Electricity Board.
  • This project will leverage the infrastructure of the Kerala State Electricity Board by establishing a core ring, and a network operating center will be set up at Eranakulam, states a source.
  • The KFON is 35,000 km long and currently being laid, which on completion will be the largest such network.
  • The CM informed that all service providers will have the option to use the network.

The CM said that the private internet service providers have established good internet connectivity across the cities but the scenario is not the same in villages, which are in dire need of a sound internet system.

“With KFON this scenario will be changed”, stated the CM.
