Digital Passport Being Developed; Already Implemented in Some Countries

There was news about Microsoft, Salesforce and Oracle, and U.S. health care non-profit Mayo Clinic announcing a coalition known as the Vaccination Credential Initiative (VCI). These companies have anticipated that governments, airlines, and other firms will ask people for proof if they have not been vaccinated or not.

This passport will be like a travel pass and it will digitally record all the vaccinations and medical records of a person. It will also ensure a hassle free travel experience for travellers.

This digital passport will be a mobile app that will help passengers to manage their travel and make sure that it aligns with all the government requirements regarding COVID-19 testing or vaccine requirements.

Reports are that the COVID-19 vaccine passport will be one of the most important travel documents in 2021.

Multiple countries have already rolled out the vaccine passport. These include Iceland, Denmark, Israel, Hungary, and Greece.

Is The COVID-19 Passport Discriminatory?

There is a possibility that the digital COVID-19 password some challenges being implemented. There is a possibility that not everyone will be on board to accept the new norms. Additionally the mandatory vaccine passport has also been deemed as discriminatory by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President and CEO, said, “The most vulnerable groups should be prioritised, a blanket vaccination requirement would simply discriminate against non-vulnerable groups, such as Generation X, Z and Millennials, who should be able to travel with proof of a negative COVID test.

The origin of the idea of a COVID-19 passoport can be credited to United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). In fact, Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General, UNWTO has also asked for global implementation of vaccination passports so that international travel can be operated safely.
