Uttarakhand Police To Scrutinize Social Media Behavior Of Passport Applicants
The Uttarakhand police have announced that the social media behavior of passport applicants will be under scrutiny before being approved. Apparently, there is a clause in the passport law that states that a passport will not be issued to anyone that is indulging in antinational activities.
Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said, “There is a clause in the passport law not to issue the document to anyone indulging in anti-national activities. I have only spoken in favour of its enforcement.”
He has also said that this will help curb the rising misuse of social media platforms.
The Uttarakhand Police had decided to examine the social media behavior of passport applicants. This is a part of the verification process at a meeting that was headed by the Director General of Police, who is the top police officer of the state.
Scrutiny Important To Curb Misuse Of Social Media?
Mr Kumar said that he had not introduced anything “new or drastic” and the DGP has stated that he has only spoken in the favour of the clause that is already there in the passport laws. As per Kumar, “As a police officer I stand against anything that falls into the category of anti-national activities as defined by our Constitution.”
As per reports, he stated that this decision has been taken primarily due to the usage of social media to “escalate tension” during the recent tractor parade in Delhi
Apparently, it is important, as per Kumar, to discourage the growing misuse of social media, and deterrants like this would send a message to users making them be more responsible about using social media.
Prior to this development, the police only checked whether any FIR has been filed against the passport applicants.
The decision was finalized during the police conference where they discussed the role of social media platforms in recent times.
