The toll collection through the FASTag has crossed Rs. 80 crores per day and the per day transactions has hit a record of 50 lakh!

The FASTag was implemented in India in December 2019, and it is compulsory for all cars, old and new alike.

This is the first time that the toll collection through FASTag has crossed Rs. 80 crores per day, on December 24, 2020. As much as 2.20 crore FASTags have been issued to date and the adoption of the FASTag has observed a remarkable increase. 

As per an official, “With FASTag being mandatory for vehicles from January 1, 2021, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made all necessary arrangements to provide seamless movement of vehicles at fee plazas. Adoption of FASTag has helped highway travellers to save time and fuel at the toll plazas.”

He has also stated that social distancing has become the new normal, and therefore, commuters are preferring to use the FASTag as a mode of payment more and more. The FASTag enables people to maintain social distancing and pay the tolls through online modes of payment.

FASTag Possible Due To Modifications In Motor Vehicle Amendment Act

As FASTag is an inclusive technological tool for toll collection, it also is a more practical and beneficial option, as per the official.

Also, with the recent modifications in the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act, 2019, the digital transaction has got the push that was required. 

FASTag implements the Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which gives users a smooth and hassle free toll payment method at toll plazas without having to wait or halt as much. The FASTag has to be linked to online payment modes, and many platforms have stepped up, including  Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Online payments, My FASTag Mobile App, PAYTM, Google pay, among others. 

It is available at more than 30,000 points of sale (PoS) across the country and mandatorily available at NHAI toll plazas.
