Airtel Beats Jio 3rd Time In Row With 69% More Growth; Why Jio Is Losing The Telco War?

The telecom battle between Jio and Airtel is getting intense, and more interesting.

As per the latest data shared by TRAI, Airtel has beaten Jio 3rd time in row, in three months.

Airtel registered 69% more growth in new users, compared to Jio, and this should worry Reliance.

What is the problem here?

Airtel Is #1 In Growth, 3rd Time In Row

For the month of October, Airtel added record 37 lakh new users, whereas Jio managed to add only 22 lakh new users.

This way, Airtel registered 68% more growth, and this happened 3rd time in 3 months.

While Airtel recorded 1.1% growth in month to month comparison, Jio managed 0.55% growth.

At the same time, Vi (Vodafone-Idea) lost 27 lakh users, in the same period, which is a reduction of 0.9%, compared to previous month.

Overall, Jio is #1 telco in India, based on total number of subscribers at 40.6 crore users.

Airtel is at #2 with 33 crore users, whereas Vi is at #3 with 29 crore users.

Why Jio Is Losing Out?

If we analyse the data, we will find that 21% of all Jio users are inactive.

This is the highest proportion of inactive users, for any telecom company in Inda.

While only 3.5% of Airtel’s users are inactive, Vi has 11% inactive users.

This speaks volume about Jio’s services and their users’ preferences. If 20% of all users of Jio are inactive, this clearly means that the users are not happy with the services.

As we spoke with some long time Jio users, we found that they are not happy with mainly 2 factors:

  • The limit of Jio to non-Jio calls. Every prepaid plan from Jio has limited calling minutes to non-Jio numbers, and this has proved to be real damper.
  • Jio coverage too has lost its’ edge, and several users complained about this.

And this straight away means advantage for Airtel, as new users are thronging to Airte camp now.

We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
