Indian Railways Need Tech-Savvy Officers

Indian Railways has begun the selection of officers who will be a part of the Railway Ministry’s cyber security team.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has instructed that every government department will be required to pick personnel with technical aptitudes. These team members will also be trained in cyber security.

This step has been taken in order to deal with online breaches and keep them contained. The Railways has also issued a directive to all the general managers, which states that operations of the national transporter has been shifting to the ICT platform gradually. Therefore, ensuring critical information has now become necessary.

Reportedly, there has been an increase in the number of breaches or attempts in breaches to the ICT  infrastructure of government organizations.

Cyber Security Top Priority Now

As the Indian Government is looking for ways to ensure the safety of the infrastructure of the ICT, a certain amount of officials will be selected from each Railway Unit and will be trained in  ICT hardware, software, compliances and networking to form the group for that particular Unit.

The Indian Railways is now planning to implement artificial intelligence and data analytics to improve operational efficiency. The two technologies will be used in train operations, passengers ticket booking, maintenance of systems, freight operations, and railways assets.

As per an official close to the development, “We will analyse all this data with the help of AI and analytics and use it in our Passenger Reservation System (PRS). This will also help in introduction of new trains, predictive asset maintenance.”

As per the officials, a predictive asset maintenance system will help monitor the state of the equipment and generate the required alerts. It will also help in taking up immediate maintenance. Also, this will help bring down the costs of maintenance and reduce the load of maintenance of assets.

The Indian Railways has collaborated with the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad for the analysis of the data that is generated by the Indian Railways.
