SoC Manufacturing, Internals

Apple, Huawei, and Qualcomm all have used the latest top-of-the-line 5nm manufacturing process for latest flagship-tier chipsets. Apple’s A14 offers custom CPU cores under the Firestorm and Icestorm monikers. In comparison, Qualcomm and Huawei’s HiSilicon use the shelf parts from Arm.

Snapdragon 888 has the newer high-end Cortex-X1 and Cortex-A78, while Kirin 9000 uses a last-gen Cortex-A77.

Apple Bionic A14 offers 21 percent higher core performance over the previous A13. Qualcomm is offering 25 CPU boost with Snapdragon 888 over the predecessor, while the Huawei Kirin 9000 has been claimed to offer 10 percent over Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Connectivity, 5G Support

Snapdragon 888 SoC has 3rd generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G Modem supporting mmWave and sub-6 wavelengths. It supports all major bands worldwide with support for 5G carrier aggregation, global multi-SIM, stand alone, non-standalone, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.

HiSilicon Kirin 9000 features an integrated Balong 5000 5G part, with both mmWave and sub-6Ghz support.

Apple A14 Bionic has to use an external modem for 5G connectivity, while both the Huawei and Qualcomm flagship chips feature an integrated modem for better connectivity.

AI Capabilities

Apple A14 features 11TOPs of AI inferencing performance, 83 percent more over the 6TOPs on Bionic A13. Snapdragon 888 has 26TOPs for AI, 73 percent increase. Similarly, Huawei claimed a 2.4x performance gain in terms of AI processing capabilities over Snapdragon 865. The Snapdragon 888 5G platform uses 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine.

It sports a newly re-engineered Qualcomm Hexagon processor and 2nd generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub for lower-power always-on AI processing.

Gaming, Graphical Performance

In terms of gaming, the chip uses Snapdragon Elite Gaming with updateable GPU Drivers, Desktop Forward Rendering, and support for up to 144 frames per second while gaming. Apple is said to offer an 8 percent boost in the graphics department over the A13. Snapdragon 888 promises 35 percent boost.

Finally, Huawei has claimed 52 percent again over Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Image Processing, Photography

Coming to photography, Snapdragon 888 will cut down the computational photography by three times and with time will transform the top-end smartphones into “professional quality cameras”. SD 888 5G has the new Qualcomm Spectra ISP which can capture photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second (around 120 photos at 12-megapixel resolution), 35 percent faster than the previous generation.

Both Snapdragon 888 and Kirin 9000 come with multi-exposure HDR video support, object segmentation, and enhanced noise reduction technologies. Qualcomm also supports 10-bit HEIF images alongside simultaneous triple camera processing.

Coming to Apple’s A14 Bionic, the Apple flagship chip came with ProRAW editing and Dolby Vision video at 60fps to boost processing performance. Apple has some edge here in terms of picture quality. All the phones powered by the latest flagship chips from respective Apple, Huawei, and Qualcomm silicon will be able to offer some top notch photography experience.
