Why Apple Charges Rs 1,20,000 For iPhone 12 Pro Which Just Costs Rs 30,000?

iPhone 12 Pro bill of materials report revealed that the component cost around Rs 30,000. Apple iPhone 12 Pro components cost $406, roughly Rs 30,000. But Apple charges Rs 1,20,000 for the same phone, that’s four times what it costs to manufacture. Similarly iPhone 12 BoM is $373, around Rs 27,500.

iPhone 12 Pro is priced starting at Rs 1,19,900 while the iPhone 12 starts at Rs 79,900, again almost three times more. But why?

Why does Apple charge three or four times more than what it costs to produce an iPhone?

Revealed by Japanese teardown firm Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, the BoM for both the new iPhone 12 series models revealed that  components used are Samsung-made OLED displays, Qualcomm X50 5G modem, A14 Bionic chip, camera components, battery and body.

Apple uses the best of hardware components available in the market, and are known to offer the best of quality phones.

OLED displays are estimated at $70 per unit, 5G modem $90 per model, Apple A14 Bionic is estimated to cost $40, RAM module for $12.8 per unit, flash memory $19.2 per unit, cameras by Sony between $7.4 and $7.9 per unit. With all the other components, the iPhone 12 Pro costs $406 and iPhone 12 costs $373.

Apples sources most of its components from South Korea, which stands at 26.8 per cent, followed by 21.9 per cent share by the US. At the third, it’s Japan from where the components are sourced is 13.6 percent. Apple only sourced 4.6 per cent of the total components for the iPhone 12 series from China. Though, China manufactures the most number of iPhones.

Starting with the entry-level iPhone 12 devices. The iPhone 12 budget line-up has two devices. The iPhone 12 Mini comes with a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. In comparison, iPhone 12 features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. respectively. Both the Super Retina XDR OLED displays do not support super-fast 120Hz refresh rates.

Under the hood, both the iPhones iPhones are powered by the company’s A14 Bionic chipset.

The company has claimed that the latest chips will offer improved overall performance and faster machine learning. It dons a next-gen Neural Engine. According to Apple, the A14 Bionic chips are the fastest created till  date offering more power efficiency and faster performance.

Coming to optics, iPhone 12 Mini comes with a dual camera set-up. iPhone 12 Mini cameras include a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens. Similarly, iPhone 12 camera has a dual lens setup. It also comes with a similar dual-camera set-up as the iPhone 12 Mini.

The iPhone 12 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel as iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Pro Max features the biggest panel of the series, it has a 6.7-inch OLED display. The displays support super-fast 120Hz refresh rates. Under the hood, as the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12, they are powered by the A14 Bionic chipset.

Apple has claimed the A14 Bionic brings will ensure that the new iPhone 12 series will be able to run far better in terms of performance per core compared to iPhone 11 series. 

Coming cameras, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max come with a few upgrades compared to the other two iPhones.

iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max has a triple camera set-up with 12-megapixel F1.6 primary camera, a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel ultra wide camera along with a LiDAR sensor. The last upgrade, the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a few extra features as improved performance and better professional photography.
