Snapchat’s ‘Spotlight’ to compete with Instagram’s Reels and TikTok

  •    Top Snapchatters to get paid 1 million dollars for creating popular content
  • The feature launched in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France.

While Tiktok and Instagram Reels are taking over the market, Snapchat launched a whole new feature to compete with them. After Instagram which added the reel feature in its application, now Snapchat enters the short video format ,popularized by Tiktok, through its brand new feature ‘Spotlight”

Why did Snapchat introduce this new feature?

Since the beginning, Snapchat has stood apart by providing a sense of privacy to the users unlike its rivals. With this new feature, it is aiming to expand the connections of its users through circulation of short videos on the platform. The users will be encouraged to use the Spotlight feature as it provides a lot of filters and augmented reality effects.

“We designed Spotlight to entertain our community while living up to Snapchat values, with our community’s well being as a top priority,” said Snap Inc, Snapchat parent firm, while launching the new service.

What is this new feature offering the audience?

To promote the feature, the company is planning to reward the most popular with up to $1 million. The videos can be up to 60 seconds long and should not contain any watermark. The creator of the most popular viral snap on the app will be rewarded everyday till the end of 2020.

“Spotlight is designed to reward creativity in a fair and fun way, and we’re distributing over $1 million USD every day to Snapchatters. Snapchatters must be 16 or older, and where applicable, obtain parental consent to earn,” the company stated.

Snapchat has created a formula exclusively for determining the earning of the snapchatters. The earning will be predominantly based on the views a unique snap gets compared to the other snaps each day.

How is Spotlight different from TikTok?

Snapchat has planned to closely review the content before spreading it on the platform. The company is going to use human moderators for doing the job, unlike its rivals which use automated systems that miss inappropriate content at many instances.

“We actively monitor for fraud to ensure that we only account for authentic engagement with Snaps. Our formula may be adjusted from time to time,” the company said.

It is mandatory for Snaps to follow all the Community Guidelines, which prohibit the spread of false information (including conspiracy theories), misleading content, hate speech, explicit or profane content, bullying, harassment, violence, and more to feature on Spotlight.

Despite the dominance of Facebook over social media, it has failed to rule over the teenage demographic. Snapchat has remained to be one of the most popular platforms which isn’t owned by Facebook. Hence it cant afford to lose its crowd over other rivals like Tiktok and Instagram now. The measures taken by Snapchat to achieve the same looks promising.
