Effective January 1st, 2021, all cars on Indian roads will have to have FASTags, as a mandatory requirement.

This includes old cars as well, which were sold before 2017.

Besides, FASTags will be now compulsory for getting 3rd party insurance as well.

Here are the major developments..

FASTags Now Compulsory For All Cars

As per the notification issued by The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), all four-wheelers on Indian roads should have FASTags.

FASTags are now compulsory for all old cars sold before 2017, as well as all new cars sold, effective January 1st, 2021. Govt of India has made the necessary amendments in the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1989 to make the new rules apply.

In a statement, The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that they are “making FASTag mandatory to be available by January 1, 2021 in old vehicles also i.e. M and N category of motor vehicles (four wheelers) sold before December 1, 2017 through amendments in CMVR, 1989″,

Note here, that FASTags were mandatory for all new cars, which were sold after 2017. But now, the new Motor Vehicles Act rules mandates FASTags for all old cars and 4-wheelers as well.

FASTags Now Mandatory For Fitness Certificate, Insurance

Govt of India has also made FASTags mandatory for getting fitness certificate of the car, as well as getting 3rd party insurance.

The rules for eForm 51 (Certificate of Insurance) has been changed, which makes FASTags as a compulsory requirement to get 3rd party insurance.

The rule for 3rd party insurance will be applicable from April 1st, 2021.

Under The National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme, Govt of India is making availability and access to getting new FASTags easier, and seamless.

FASTags are prepaid RFID tags, which are used to automatically deduct toll plaza charges from the car, and there is no need to stop the car and make the payment.
