People Being Scammed On Searching For Favorite Celebs: Cristiano Ronaldo, Tabu, Taapsee And More

After Cristiano Ronaldo, Tabu, Taapsee Pannu, Anushka Sharma & Sonakshi Sinha are the celebrities with the highest web search risk in India.

As revealed by the latest research by a cybersecurity firm, McAfee, if you search for these celebrities online, you might be falling prey to cybercrimes and your sensitive information may be compromised.

Venkat Krishnapur, Vice President of Engineering and Managing Director, McAfee India, said, “Users look for free, pirated content such as sports events, movies, shows, and images and leaked videos of celebrities. When they compromise on security for convenience and freebies, they put their digital lives at risk. It’s vital that fans stay vigilant, avoid suspicious links that promise free content and think twice before clicking.”

As per McAfee, these scamsters put to use the fascination that people have with celebs to install the malware in their electronic devices by leading their victims to click on malicious websites.

Increased Work From Home Led To Increased Threats Of Cyber Fraud

Also, the firm has said that as people are working from home now, the risk to these threats has increased as the search for celebrities or content online has increased.

Bhishma Singh, DCP, Crime (Cyber), Delhi Police, says, “During the pandemic, we’ve seen a rise in such online activities, and if users are alert, they’ll be able to stop scammers from accessing their data. Searches related to Bollywood and Hollywood stars, footballers and cricketers make users vulnerable. So, they should check the website’s URL before clicking on it.

In the past  too, cyber police cells and IT departments have warned people about such online risks and advised people to be safe while surfing the internet.
