OpenSignal Findings

Further, the conclusions were obtained by a London-based network analytics firm OpenSignal over a period of 90 days which commenced from 1, May 2020.

Reportedly, Airtel has won four of 7 awards outright that include, Video Experience, Games Experience (instead of Latency Experience which it won in our previous report), Voice App Experience and Download Speed Experience.

While Jio has retained its position on two awards, named as 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience.

On the other hand, ownership of the Upload Speed Experience award has smoothly passed from Vodafone to Vi.

Video Experience Award

Moreover, Bharti Airtel proved its consistency by winning the ‘Video Experience award’ for the fourth time in a row with a score of 57.36 out of 100 (a score of 55 to 65 is considered good), amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Basically, video experience is determined by “fast loading times and only occasional stalling while streaming videos online on a smartphone”.

Airtel has gone ahead by 3.4 from the second-placed network Vi from 2.4.

For Video Experience, all the other operators showed modest declines in their performance (1.5% to 2.3%) most likely due to the COVID-19 crisis and change in user behavior.

While Airtel gave the best 4G and 3G video experience.

What About Download Speed?

Airtel has retained the top position on download speed for the sixth report in a row with a score of 10.4 Mbps.

While the Vi network was close with a speed of 10.1 Mbps, on the other hand,  Jio lagged behind sharply with an average download speed of 6.9 Mbps.

In case of BSNL, the download and upload speed it provides is just 3 Mbps and 1Mbps which is less than half then the third-ranked operator in the list, Jio.

What About Upload Speed?

For Upload speed, Vodafone and Idea, Vi has won the Upload Speed Experience award with a score of 3.5 Mbps.

Further beating second-placed Airtel by 0.7 Mbps (24.7%) with average upload speeds observed by our Vi users were 1.3 Mbps.

Mobile Gaming

There is a substantial increase in Mobile Gaming during the lockdown period and Airtel has here too with a score of 55.6 out of 100.

Basically, this measures the mobile experience of the multiplayer mobile Games.

Which is basically affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter to determine the impact on gameplay.

If we talk about BSNL, it is far behind the three operators in all aspects registering scores in the 30s in video and games experience.

4G Availability And Coverage

Jio continues to have a stronghold on both and managed to get the 4G Availability award and the 4G Coverage Experience award.

Now, it has won the 4G Coverage Experience award for two reports in a row.
