Tesla To Set Up Research And Development Centre In India: Talks With Officials Underway

As per reports, Tesla Inc is in talks with the Karnataka Government, and if all goes well, a large research and development (R&D) centre of Tesla Inc will be set up in Bengaluru.

Sources close to the development have revealed that “Tesla has shown initial interest to invest in a research and innovation centre in Karnataka and talks are at a preliminary stage. The first proposal is for an R&D centre and we have already had at least two rounds of discussions.”

Bengaluru is rightly known as the Silicon Valley of India or the IT capital of India primarily due to the cities role as the countries leading information technology centre.

The city is home to several aviation, biotechnology, and information technology industries along with popular automakers and R&D centres, such as Mahindra Electric, Bosch, and start-ups like Sun Mobility, Ather, and Ola Electric.

India To Be The Second Country To Have A Tesla Research Centre

As per reports, the India head of Tesla and the industries commissioner of Karnataka will be taking the plans forward in another meeting later this month.

India is the fourth largest automobile market, and if this proposed R&D is actually set up, India will be the second country other than the US to have a Tesla research centre after China.

In 2016, the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, had annoucned plans to bring Tesla to India but those plans have been delayed since. Apparently, Musk was doubtful about the local regulations that would enforce the foreign based retailers to source 30% of the parts locally and this would prevent a launch.

This is still a developing story and we’ll keep you informed as we get more updates!
