A new battery has been built by the Shiv Nadar University and Institution of Eminence (IoE) that is way better than the conventional lithium-ion batteries in many ways.

Read on for all the details about this new battery right here!

Lithium Sulphur Battery Developed; Sustainable, Cheaper, Three Times Higher Density Capacity

The two organizations have developed a new Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) battery which is cheaper, more sustainable and has an energy density three times higher than the usual lithium-ion batteries.

This battery is the brainchild of Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Bimlesh Lochab, and he has worked on this battery for 5 years. She and her team also partnered with Dr Sagar Mitra who is a professor in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

In this technology, there will be a sustainable method of battery production which will have ingredients like sulphur, a byproduct of the petroleum industry, and cardinal, which is an agro-waste element.

As per Lochab, “The research focuses on principles of green chemistry to find a solution that addresses requirements of industries and the environment, simultaneously.”

The aim of the centre project was to develop a more efficient battery than the conventional ones for which came up with an idea of using a new and improved cathode for lithium sulphur battery configuration.

As per reports, the technology of the battery has synthesized a bio-based molecule which can be produced on a commercial level.

For the cathode, the researchers also used cardanol as an unconventional choice. this resulted in the lithium sulphur battery showing an increased capacity for retention and also a longer battery life in a much smaller unit than the one used before.

The sulphur for the batter has been obtained from industrial waste and the cardanol was easily available from bio-renewable feed stock quite easily, thus guaranteeing the battery’s sustainability.

Lithium Sulphur Battery Safe To Use: Drive From Delhi To Mumbai On Single Charge

Additionally, the safety of the battery is assured by Dr. Lochab through the usage of eugenol copolymer in the battery which is derived from clove oil. She said that this element is sustainable for the environment, halogen-free, flame-retardant, reducing the combustible property of the battery.

Lochab explains the practicality of the battery with this example:

An electric car with a range of 400 km that uses the conventional Lithium ion battery will be able to multiple its range four times to 1600 km on a single charge. She says that this would mean that an individual can drive from Delhi to Mumbai on a single charge and still be left with some power in a battery.
