In 2017, newly elected Congress Govt had announced free smartphones for all students in the state.
Starting today, that is International Youth Day and Krishna Janmashtmi, Punjab Govt will start distributing free smartphones.

Free Smartphones For All Students In Punjab
Punjab Govt has announced that in the first phase, more than 1.75 lakh free smartphones will be provided to students in the state.
The first consignment fo 50,000 smartphones have already been received, and the distribution will kickstart from today, that is August 12.
Called as Amarinder Free Mobile Phone Scheme, this scheme has been started by Punjab CM Amarinder Singh.
These will be basic smartphones with front and back camera, and every student will receive 1 year of free Internet and free outgoing and incoming calls as well.
Eligibility Criteria For Free Smartphone Yojana in Punjab
All students are eligible to get free smartphones in Punjab.
However, in the 1st phase, students of class 11th and 12th will be targeted, and provided with free smartphones.
Among them, the girl students will be the first beneficiary, and the first consignment of 50,000 smartphones will be provided to them starting today, August 12th, 2020.
Gradually, the scheme will cover the rest of the students.
How To Get Free Smartphones?
Students who wish to have free smartphones from Punjab Govt needs to fill a self-declaration form, wherein they will need to mention the reason why they need the smartphone.
Once that is received, they will be asked to come to a local Govt facility and get the smartphone.
How Free Smartphones Will Be Distributed?
Punjab Govt has informed that in order to avoid crowding, they have formed 26 distribution centers all over Chandigarh and Punjab state.
These are District headquarters of the specific cities, along with other Govt offices.
No more than 15 students will be permitted to be present any center, at any time.
A Govt official said, “Not more than 15 students studying in that town/district will be invited at each location for handing over the smartphones,”
